Mike’s Fund Raising Bike Ride

Wed 12 December 2012

As some of you may be aware, on 5th September 2011 I successfully completed a solo long distance cycle ride, from John O’Groats to Lands End some 950 miles (or thereabouts because of navigation skills!).  I trained for quite some months, and my padded lycra shorts with sudocream worked well!

Mom and Dad bought me a new bike (!) something I had not asked for, for some 45 years and given I started at John O’Groats, taking the downhill option which seemed quite sensible (at the start!)

The reason behind the ride was the newly formed charity, called the Sue May Brain Tumour Society which has now grown and developed to become the Jersey Brain Tumour Charity .

The Society was officially formed on 1 July 2011 before the Royal Court in Jersey and is a consequence of Sue May’s own journey.  For those of you that may not know, Sue quite suddenly and unexpectedly and with no previous symptoms collapsed.  Sue was diagnosed with a serious brain tumour described, in terms of size, of something akin to the size of a cooking apple!  The tumour has, as far as possible, been successfully removed.  In particular, Sue recognised how fortunate she has been in being able to have that recovery and felt driven to form the Society as a way of raising awareness and helping others in Jersey be it patients, relatives, friends, colleagues or employers of those persons affected by the sudden devastation a brain tumour can cause to a persons life and others associated with that person.

Therefore, the bike ride may have been a challenge for me but there can be no comparison to the challenges Sue has faced over the past couple of years.  If the Charity can, help perhaps a few people in Jersey in a way that is meaningful and practical to them we will have given something back and we hope have helped others in some small way.
